Instead, check out their videogame consoles. Today, Sony is releasing a highly anticipated new feature for the PlayStation 3 called trophies. (The feature arrives on consoles as part of a software update beamed over the Internet; it also includes in-game XMB (XrossMediaBar) and a Google search bar.)

Essentially a game-rewards program, the trophies work on a four-tier system. When playing certain games, high scores can earn bronze, silver, gold, and platinum awards Internet Games . That will allow hardcore gamers to show off their accomplishments (and boost their “nerd cred”) to fellow players. To further stroke the ego, there will be a sound effect every time a trophy is unlocked.

Because the trophies are designated by individual game developers rather than Sony, the feature is not available on most games so far. But given the outrage expressed by commentators at several leading gaming blogs, Internet Games it’s only a matter of time before game producers feel the pressure to include the rewards feature on their own games. Expectations have also been raised by Xbox 360 Achievements, a similar rewards system launched earlier by Microsoft’s rival console Xbox 360.
